22 ways to save gas

1 Keep your tires properly inflated. Under-inflated tires waste fuel and wear down the tire tread. Also, check the tires regularly to see if they are aligned and balanced.

2 Do you have garbage in your trunk? The more your car weighs, the more fuel it burns. For every additional 250 pounds your engine carries, the car loses about one mile per gallon in fuel economy.

3 Buy a car that saves fuel.

4 Make regular adjustments. A well-tuned engine consumes less gasoline.

5 Do not heat your car for more than one minute. Something else and you’re burning that expensive fuel.

6 Turn off your car. Every time you don’t move for more than 1 minute, you should turn off the engine to help save gas. You can save gas by turning off your car while waiting at long traffic lights, railroad crossings, or while driving.

7 Slow down. It is a proven fact that driving fast will increase drag (turbulence) and therefore increase fuel consumption.

8 Do not fill up the gas tank, you will probably end up spilled on the road.

9 Park quickly. If you drive through the entire parking lot looking for a closer parking spot, you will use more gas. If it’s further afield, the walk will do you good!

10 No quick starts. Drive evenly at a steady pace. Quick starts burn a lot of gas.

11 No quick stops. Try to anticipate stop signs and traffic lights.

12 Keep your car cool. Park in the shade. When your car heats up, the fuel in the tank expands, creating vapors that come out of the gas cap.

13 Fill at night. The pumps deliver more gas when temperatures are lower.

14 Limit air conditioning. Consume fuel. At lower speeds, open windows or sunroof to keep cool. At higher speeds, use the car fan instead (open windows create resistance that reduces mileage).

15 Carpool. Share the cost of gas and wear and tear on your vehicle will also be reduced.

16 Use your cruise control, especially on flat stretches of roads. This will prevent you from unconsciously accelerating and wasting fuel.

17 Use a lower octane fuel. Buy lower grade or octane gasoline that is appropriate for your car. Unless your car requires premium gasoline, filling your car with high-octane fuel is a waste of money.

18 Replace dirty air filters. When your engine air filter becomes clogged with dirt, it makes your engine work harder and your car becomes less fuel efficient.

19 Use synthetic motor oil. This will make your engine run better and give you better mileage.

20 Don’t drive. Walk, bike, or take the bus. Do you really need to drive to the store when it’s just a couple of blocks down the street?

21 Drive a motorcycle or scooter. They are cheaper and often get 70 MPG or more.

22 Remove the racks. If you have a removable roof rack and you’re not using it, remove it to improve your fuel economy by up to 5 percent.
