Since the release of the film, Mama Mia, and in addition to the continued success of the West End Musical of the same name, ABBA costumes have been extremely popular at ’70s costume parties across the country.
Mama Mia was an excellent movie and deserved all the applause it received, so it is totally understandable why ABBA costumes are currently the “hot” topic. However, it is worth noting that there are plenty of alternative ’70s costumes and here we discuss five of the best.
Rock bands from the 70s
It is true that ABBA was a great bastion of the music of the 70s, but there were many other rock bands from that time that were not only great musicians, but also fashion icons. David Bowie, Elton John, and T-Rex are obvious examples, but perhaps the best example of a 70s rock group from a costume standpoint is Queen, and in particular Freddie Mercury. Another type of costumes from the 70s that is worn a lot is the so-called Pimps fashion from the Harlem scene of the 70s. If ABBA Fancy Dress is the most popular among the ladies of the 1970s, then there is no question which costume is that most men prefer. Elvis Presley wore some great outfits towards the end of his career and there are plenty of authentic looking Elvis yarns available so you can go to the party dressed as the King.
The movies
The iconic movies of the time are also the inspiration behind many ’70s costumes. Star Wars was a huge hit in that decade and with a number of interesting characters, it’s easy to see why they appear at many Halloween parties today. Perhaps the best known of all the ’70s movie costumes is of course Superman and there are many Clark Kents in the making who can’t wait to dress up in this outfit.

Of course, the 1970s was the decade when disco music suddenly took off and ushered in a whole new world of fashion. Hot pants, jumpsuits, and psychedelic shirts are great things to wear when you want to kick back and be cool on the dance floor and are a great alternative to ABBA costumes.
