Europe Behind The Scenes: Book Review: Rick Steves

I recommend this book for many reasons. First of all, it’s because my website is about my experiences and behind-the-scenes thoughts on Europe. Rick Steves’s “Europe Through the Backdoor” 2011 also offers an in-depth look at Europe behind the scenes. I enjoyed reading this book because Rick started with how to get started before you leave. I liked how Rick suggests packing light, however I disagree with how he says it is limited to a 20 pound carry-on. I don’t agree with your limit because many people, including myself, like to change clothes and have room for memories. Also, depending on your laundry situation, while in Europe, packing light and not having enough clothes can be a problem. I agree that he thinks it is a good idea to have a toiletry kit with a hook. The sinks in shelters do not have countertops most of the time and it is nice to have a kit that can be hung on a towel rack. When it comes to credit and debit cards, I also agree with Rick. He says bring a debit card, a credit card, and an emergency stash of cash. Having three ways to get money is helpful and reassuring. When it comes to bringing a handheld smartphone / wireless device, I’m exactly on what Rick says. He claims that having one is good because you can stay connected and have access to the Internet without having a heavy laptop. I agree with him on this because he had my Blackberry and I loved Google Maps at my fingertips and all my contact numbers.

I agree because a moderately priced hotel is sometimes as good as a high priced one. However, I don’t like how he said to consider a cheap chain hotel. Depending on what type of person you are, you may really regret choosing a cheaper hotel over a slightly higher priced one. When it comes to hostels, I completely agree with how Rick said that hostels are not hotels at all. He said that a lot of people hate hostels and a lot of people love them. I fall into the category of hate because; I will not stay in a hostel again, regardless of my budget. I’d rather pay more for privacy and service.

Overall, I enjoyed reading “Europe Through the Back Door” by Rick Steves. I think he is very smart when it comes to traveling and I agree with most of his suggestions and thoughts. But, I think he might have a predisposition to travel because he’s older. That is probably why I disagreed with some of your suggestions and thoughts while reading and reviewing this book. In general, I recommend that you go to your local bookstore and read this book or buy it: Europe Through The Back Door.
