Turn Tight allows a tractor to cut around small objects in the landscape. The new steering has an industry leading 8-inch radius on 2011 Craftsman Yard and Garden tractors.
Turn Tight Technology Explanation:
Turn Tight uses an innovative steering system achieved through a patent pending control system that allows the front wheels to increase their turning range without touching the mower deck or tractor chassis. With this technology, the wheels rotate to match their corresponding radius, that is, the inside of the wheel matches the inside radius and the outside side wheel matches the outside radius of the turn. “(This means that the inside wheels have the same track and outer wheels have the same track around an object).
It is the tightest turning radius available on a non-zero turning tractor. The turning radius of Craftsman Yard and Garden tractors now outperforms their closest competition by more than 30%. (The Craftsman 30% improvement represents an 8 “turning radius on a Craftsman YT versus a comparable Cub Cadet with a 12” turning radius)

Turn Tight Facts:
The turning radius of a tractor is measured at the rear wheel when the steering wheel of a tractor is turned as far as possible while the tractor is in motion. The smaller the radius, the easier it will be to mow around obstacles and corners. 20 years ago, 18 inches was considered pretty good for a lawn, garden, or garden tractor.
For open areas, a tight turning radius allows you to turn quickly and cut parallel to the last row cut in the opposite direction. (If you are one of those folks who like a perfectly striped lawn, this is a huge bonus!) This is a huge improvement over a tractor with a larger one. The larger turning radius takes longer to turn and many times you have to use reverse gear to re-align for the next parallel cutting path.
A tighter turning radius indicates a smaller turn. As a result, the tractor can mow around smaller obstacles without having to back up. This can save you a considerable amount of time when mowing a yard like mine with lots of trees and gardens. Since the radius is 1/2 the diameter of a circle, an 8 “turning radius will allow you to cut completely around a 16” obstacle without backing up or making a second pass.
Tighter turns allow you to get around mowing obstacles like sheds, garden beds, and birdbaths more easily. In many cases, you may not even need a lawn mower.
