To Wii or not to Wii: that is the question!

Ever since Nintendo first released the Wii in 2007, it’s been flying off the shelves at every store in the US and other countries as well. But what is it that makes this particular console so incredibly popular? Well, for one thing, the Wii isn’t just another console and it’s unlike anything we’ve seen since the years when Atari first launched.

This gaming console is one where you can actually interact with the game, and now with the release of the new iFit it has surpassed any other system yet. You’d think everyone would love these consoles, right? That is, since September 2008, more than 34.55 million units have been shipped to North America, South America, Japan and other regions.

You would think Japan would have been this unit of shipments, however Japan is only at 6.91 million while South and North America are at 15.19 million and The Financial Times reported that as of September 12, 2007 their sales have been the leader of his generation. One of the named features of this particular console is its wireless controller, also called a remote control, which can be used on a handheld pointing device and sense movement in three dimensions.

With all these important record-breaking stats, you’d think everyone would love a Wii, but the opposite is actually true. People often refer to this as the “kids system” with its interactive roots, and play like attributes, many people don’t see this particular system as a real system. I guess for my generation we think if we can’t just be lazy and sit on a couch then it must be a stupid idea.

I don’t particularly feel the same as some of these people! In fact, I think the unique factors of the Wii make it an amazing gaming console and a REAL, tried and true system. Nintendo knocked out most other consoles because it IS an interactive system! That was the point! To get people to take off their diapers and start moving more than just their fingers.

When I first heard about the Wii and iFit, I thought it was an amazing idea to get anyone and everyone involved, old or young. Getting people involved in an activity where they could also have fun and potentially make people’s hearts race with games like Guitar Hero and Boxing. I mean there is literally no other innovator like Nintendo out there. Game consoles are a dime a dozen and a new one comes out every year; console, portable or otherwise.

Frankly, I don’t think anyone will catch up with the uniquely inventive stuff Nintendo did when it launched the Wii, and even if they did later on, there will still be millions upon millions who will remember that the Wii has conquered gaming. universe!

Other game consoles from the ever-popular Nintendo include the following:

The Super Nintendo Entertainment System was Nintendo’s second home console, after the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The console introduced advanced graphics and sound capabilities that made up for its relatively slow CPU, compared to other consoles at the time. Additionally, the development of a variety of enhancement chips (which shipped as part of certain game cartridges) helped keep it competitive in the marketplace.

The Nintendo 64, often abbreviated as N64, is Nintendo’s third home video game console for the international market. Named for its 64-bit GPU, it was released on June 23, 1996 in Japan, September 29, 1996 in North America, March 1, 1997 in Europe and Australia, September 1, 1997 in France, and the December 10, 1997 in Brazil. It is the last Nintendo home console to use cartridges to store games (Nintendo switched to a proprietary optical format for the GameCube, then to standard DVD-sized media for the Wii), and for being the first modern home console to have a controller with an analog stick.

The Nintendo GameCube, often abbreviated as GCN, is Nintendo’s fourth home video game console and is part of the sixth generation console era. The hardware system is the most compact and second cheapest after the sixth generation Sega Dreamcast. It is the successor to the Nintendo 64 and predecessor to the Nintendo Wii. The console was released on September 14, 2001 in Japan, November 18, 2001 in North America, May 3, 2002 in Europe, and May 17, 2002 in Australia. GameCube sold 21.74 million units worldwide.

The Nintendo DS Lite is a dual-screen handheld video game console developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It is a thinner, brighter, and lighter redesign of the Nintendo DS, designed to be aesthetically sleeker while drawing inspiration from the Game Boy Advance SP’s styling, and to appeal to broader commercial audiences. It was announced on January 26, 2006, over a month before its initial release in Japan on March 2, 2006 due to overwhelming demand for the original model. It has been released in Australia, North America, Europe, New Zealand, Singapore, and defined regions in South America, the Middle East, and East Asia. As of September 30, 2008, DS Lite sales reached 65.51 million units worldwide, according to Nintendo.
