What is the difference between normal photography and portrait photography?

The uniqueness of photography

Photography is an art that gives a unique and inconceivable vision of each and every thing. Every photographer, being a unique artist, tries to capture each and every photo in a unique way. In photography, every angle and pose is important. Based on these main factors, photography can be classified into various types. One of them is portrait photography.

Main features of portrait photography

For professional photographers, portrait photography is not a new topic. It is basically a portrait of the face of any person or object. It also aims to highlight the expressions, moods and personality of the subject. The whole body can be included at the client’s request. Photos are generally clicked along making sure the focus is more on the subject.

Portrait photography, being a part of photography, has many distinct characteristics that make it different from regular photography. While normal photography may include a focus on the person’s face or may focus on the background, portraits ensure that the person whose photo is clicked has their face or bodice exactly in main focus.

Role of lighting as a difference

Lighting is another factor that plays a big role in portrait photography. In portrait photography, since the main focus is on the subject, photographers make sure that most of the light falls on the subject. Other types of lighting used in portrait photography are:

  • Three-point lighting that itself includes:

1.Light key,

2. Fill in light,

3. Accent and kicker light,

  • Butterfly lighting.

Normal photography includes lighting for different types of poses. Some of these important types are:

  • natural lighting,

  • window lighting,

  • outdoor lighting,

  • flash or speed light,

  • ambient lighting,

  • indoor light,

  • Studio lighting and much more.

Types of normal and portrait photography

Portrait photography itself is divided into many subtypes including the following:

traditional Portrait,

candid portrait,

environmental Portrait,

· glamor portrait,

lifestyle portraits,

surreal portrait,

conceptual portrait and

· Abstract portrait.

Normal photography, on the other hand, due to its broader scope includes many types and their respective subtypes.

Therefore, we can say that portrait photography is a specific type of photography in which the main focus is kept on the photographed subject. And since we have a specific focus, we definitely need a specific lighting arrangement for that.
